Veterans Disability Benefits in New Jersey
New Jersey is the proud home of over 300,000 veterans. The state, known for its rich history and diverse culture, has a deep appreciation for those who have put their lives on the line for our country. In recognition of their service, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a range of benefits to veterans residing in New Jersey.
One important benefit is the VA Disability program, which provides monthly financial support to veterans living with disabilities linked to their military service.
VA Disability Compensation
The VA rates each disability from 10% to 100% based on the severity of the condition. A higher rating means that more money is sent to the veteran each month. If a veteran has multiple disabilities, each one gets a separate rating. These ratings are then combined and aggregated into a single overall rating.
Veterans usually need to take part in a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam, which is a medical test run by the VA to identify and rate the veteran's service-related disabilities.
Eligibility Requirements for VA Disability Benefits
To qualify for VA benefits, New Jersey veterans must meet several guidelines.
Both of these must be true:
- You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
- Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.
And, at least one of the following must be true:
- You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.
or
- An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
- You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.
Eligibility rules can seem confusing. Pro tip: it really helps to be prepared.
In order for your claim to be approved, your current health condition must be linked to active duty service. You need solid medical evidence that shows this connection, so keep your medical documents and any witness testimonies well organized.
How to Apply for VA Disability in New Jersey
When it's time to apply for VA disability benefits, start by gathering the necessary documents like military records, medical files, and discharge papers.
Be aware that the type of military discharge you received can greatly influence your eligibility for VA benefits. For instance, a dishonorable discharge can make you ineligible for VA services and benefits.

Claims Intake Center
PO Box 4444

If applying in person, visit your local VA office for assistance. Be sure to keep copies of all your documents.
Processing times can differ, usually from 3-6 months, or even longer. Submitting complete and accurate information helps speed up the process.
Appeal a Denial
Was your VA disability claim denied? You have the right to appeal the decision by submitting a Notice of Disagreement. This form must be sent within one year from the date of the denial notice.
Prepare your medical records, relevant documents, and any testimonies that can establish a connection between your disability and your time in service. Having strong medical evidence will strengthen your appeal and improve your chances of reversing the initial decision.
